A series of novel sulfide derivatives containing 1,3,4-oxadiazole and pyridine were synthesized, characterized, and tested for their antibacterial activity against tobacco bacterial wilt and rice bacterial blight and for insecticidal activity toward diamondback moth. The results showed that some compounds had good insecticidal and bactericidal activity, e.g., the activities of compounds 6e and 6g-6j toward tobacco bacterial wilt were much better than those of com. thiodiazole-copper, and some of the synthesized compounds possessed good insecticidal activity against Plutella xylostella. Compounds 6d, 6h, 6j, 6l, 6p, 6r, and 6p displayed over 93% activity at 500 mg L-1.

Potassium K2P (leak) channels conduct current across the entire physiol. voltage range and carry leak or background currents that are, in part, time- and voltage-independent. K2P2.1 channels (i.e., TREK-1, KCNK2) are highly expressed in excitable tissues, where they play a key role in the cellular mechanisms of neuroprotection, anesthesia, pain perception, and depression. Here, we report for the first time that human K2P2.1 channel activity is regulated by monoterpenes (MTs). We found that cyclic, aromatic monoterpenes containing a phenol moiety, such as carvacrol, thymol and 4-IPP had the most profound effect on current flowing through the channel (up to a 6-fold increase). By performing sequential truncation of the carboxyl-terminal domain of the channel and testing the activity of several channel regulators, we identified two distinct regulatory domains within this portion of the protein. One domain, as previously reported, was needed for regulation by arachidonic acid, anionic phospholipids, and temperature changes. Within a second domain, a triple arginine residue motif (R344-346), an apparent PIP2-binding site, was found to be essential for regulation by holding potential changes and important for regulation by monoterpenes.

Vanadium plays an important role in biol. systems and exhibits a variety of bioactivities. In an effort to uncover the chem. and biochem. of vanadium with nitrogen- and oxygen-containing ligands, we report herein the synthesis and spectroscopic characterization of vanadium(IV) complexes with hydrazide ligands. Substituents on these ligands exhibit systematic variations of electronic and steric factors. Elemental and spectral data indicate the presence of a dimeric unit with two vanadium(IV) ions coordinated with two hydrazide ligands along with two H2O mols. The stability studies of these complexes over time in coordinating solvent, DMSO, indicates binding of the solvent mols. to give [V2O2L2(H2O)2(DMSO)2]2+ (L = hydrazide ligand) and then conversion of it to a monomeric intermediate species, [VOL(DMSO)3]1+. Hydrazide ligands are inactive against urease, whereas vanadium(IV) complexes of these ligands show significant inhibitory potential against this enzyme and are found to be non-competitive inhibitors. These complexes also show low phytotoxicity indicating their usefulness for soil ureases. Structure-activity relationship studies indicate that the steric and/or electronic effects that may change the geometry of the complexes play an important role in their inhibitory potential and phytotoxicity.
