Transition metal-free synthesis of synthetically valuable aryl iodides from aryl diazofluroborates in water under mild conditions has been described. This paper reports an electrochemically grown film consisting of layered MnO2 intercalated with hexadecylpyridinium cations (HDPy+), which can selectively sorb and detect iodide anions in aqueous solution amperometrically. Sorption of iodide by the HDPy/MnO2 film did not occur via ion exchange, but through hydrophobic interactions between the interlayer organic phase of the film and iodide ions in solution. The sorption rate increased with the deposited amount of MnO2. During the sorption process, the interlayer spaces expanded, and new diffraction peaks appeared that were attributed to the incorporated species. Anodic polarization of the iodide-sorbed HDPy/MnO2 film led to electron transfer from the incorporated iodide to the underlying substrate through the MnO2 sheets. The oxidized iodide was expelled from the film as molecular I-2, while the expanded interlayer spaces were restored to their original state. Thus, the MnO2 layers and the incorporated HDPy can synergistically sorb/desorb iodide anions, resulting in a unique self-cleaning function that can operate electrochemically. Among the radionuclides that can migrate from radioactive wastes buried within consolidated argillaceous rocks, I-129 poses a particular problem due to its high mobility in geomedia and its very long half-life of 1.6 10(7) years. It was hoped (1) to confirm this retardation by means of radial diffusion experiments and (2) to estimate the influence of the initial iodide concentrations towards the iodide uptake. The results obtained from in-diffusion stage show that (1) no iodide uptake occurs at high initial concentrations and (2) an uptake at low initial concentrations cannot be clearly evidenced. Finally. the most singular behaviour of iodide was highlighted for all the initial iodide concentrations, from the out-diffusion stage. during which some amount of iodide, available for out-diffusion, were not involved in the diffusion process. Context: Active placental transport of maternal iodide by the thyroidal sodium iodide symporter ( NIS) provides an essential substrate for fetal thyroid hormone synthesis. NIS is expressed in trophoblast and is regulated by human choriogonadotropin ( hCG). In thyroid, iodide down- regulates expression of several genes including NIS. Placentas of iodine- deficient rats demonstrate up- regulation of NIS mRNA, suggesting a role for iodide in regulating placental NIS. Objectives and Methods: The objectives were to examine effects of iodide on expression of NIS and hCG in BeWo choriocarcinoma cells. Gene expression was studied by quantitative real- time PCR. Effects on NIS protein expression were assessed by Western blotting. Functional activity of NIS was measured by I-125 uptake. Expression of hCG protein was assessed by immunoassay of secreted hormone. Results: Iodide inhibited NIS mRNA and membrane protein expression as well as I-125 uptake, which were paralleled by decreased beta hCG mRNA expression and protein secretion. Iodide had no effects on pendrin expression. Addition of hCG increased NIS mRNA expression. This effect was partially inhibited by addition of iodide. The inhibitory effects of iodide on NIS mRNA expression were abolished by propylthiouracil and dithiothreitol. Conclusions: We conclude that expression of placental NIS is modulated by maternal iodide. This may occur through modulation of hCG effects on NIS and hCG gene expression.

DETERMINATION OF MICRO-AMOUNTS OF IODIDE IN GEOTHERMAL WATER USING AN ION-SELECTIVE ELECTRODE

Iodide in various geothermal water samples was determined simply and rapidly with an iodide ion selective electrode. Two procedures were investigated for the determination of iodide. The first method is a direct method in which the iodide content in the geothermal water samples was directly measured with the iodide electrode after the addition of sodium hydrogen sulfite, a definite amount of iodide and ionic strength adjustment buffer. The other is a solvent extraction method in which iodide in the samples oxidized in advance by hydrogen peroxide was extracted into carbon tetrachloride. The iodide back-extracted into an aqueous sulfite solution was measured with the iodide electrode. Both procedures were successfully applied to the determination of iodide in the concentration below 1 ppm in various geothermal water samples with a relative standard deviation of 1.8%, and the results obtained by the proposed method were in good agreement with those by the spectrophotometric method using Methylene Blue.
