Measurements by microcalorimetry and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy have pointed out the nucleation and growth stages during J-aggregation of a cyanine dye on cubic AgBr emulsion crystals treated with iodide. For the cyanine dye studied, the integral molar adsorption enthalpy on an iodide-doped AgBr surface is higher than that on the pure AgBr surface. J-aggregation is observed on AgBr crystals having a surface iodide concentration greater-than-or-equal-to 16 atom%. Below this iodide concentration, only dye monomers and dimers are formed at dye coverage less-than-or-equal-to 0.4. Differential adsorption enthalpy measurements versus dye coverage reveal the influence of dye-dye interaction on the adsorption enthalpy. The presence of iodide on AgBr influences the nucleation stage of J-aggregate formation. XPS and XAES experiments show that the Ag 3d5/2-I 3d5/2 binding energy of surface iodide at low iodide concentrations is significantly larger than that of surface AgI or of surface AgBrI. The chemical state of this surface iodide is interpreted to be influenced by high-energy sites located near corners and edges of the cubic AgBr grains, as revealed by imaging SIMS experiments.

Systematic Study on Alkyl Iodide Initiators in Living Radical Polymerization with Organic Catalysts

Several low-molar-mass alkyl iodides were studied as initiating dormant species in living radical polymerization with organic catalysts. Primary, secondary, and tertiary alkyl iodides with different stabilizing groups (ester, phenyl, and cyano groups) were systematically studied for the rational design of initiating alkyl iodides. The activation rate constants of these alkyl iodides were experimentally determined for quantitative comparison. These alkyl iodides were used in the polymerizations of methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate to examine their initiation ability in these polymerizations. A telechelic polymer was prepared using an alkyl iodide with a functional group. Alkyl iodides with multi-initialing sites were also studied.

A novel loss-of-function deletion in sodium/iodide symporter gene in follicular thyroid adenoma

The sodium/iodide symporter (NIS) actively transports iodide into thyrocytes. However, in thyroid carcinoma, down-regulated or mis-targeted NIS expression is commonly found and usually correlates with tumor dedifferentiation and loss of radioiodine uptake capacity. In this study, we screened NIS genes of thyroid tumor tissues from three patients with thyroid carcinoma by using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and nucleotide sequencing. We found a novel exon 6 deletion in NIS gene. We then examined the NIS gene from the blood of this patient. The nucleotide sequences of the flanking region of exon 6 were normal. By transient transfection and I-125 uptake assay, we found that the wild type NIS-expressing HepG2 cells accumulated six times more iodide than mutant and mock HepG2 cells. Radioactive iodine (I-131) is routinely used for the treatment of differentiated thyroid cancers.
