The combined organic phases were washed withsaturated brine, dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated in vacuo. Then the crude product waspurified by column chromatography through silica gel, eluting with ethyl acetate/petroleum ethersolvent mixture, to give the pure product.

General procedure: Et3N (10 mL) and THF (10 mL) were added to 4-methoxyiodobenzene19c (1.05 g, 4.5 mmol), CuI (87 mg, 450 mmol), (Ph3P)2PdCl2(158 mg, 225 mmol) and Na ascorbate (89 mg, 450 mmol) under Ar. The mixturewas stirred at 40C for 30 min. Me3SiCCH (1.03 g, 10.5 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred at 40C for16 h. The evaporation residue, in CH2Cl2, was washed (water,2 ) and dried. Chromatography(petroleum ether / EtOAc 99:1) gave 20c (909 mg, 99%) as an oil (lit.2oil).

After filtering the crude material over a padof silica (5 g) and evaporation of the solvent the crude material (1H-NMR) was purified by silica column chromatography (eluent 10% EtOAc in pentanes, Rf = 0.41). After removal of the volatiles,the desired hydroxyl product was typically isolated as yellow oil with a purity > 98% (by 1H-NMR)and was used directly in the next step. Simultaneous determination of iodide and iodate in seawater by transient isotachophoresis-capillary zone electrophoresis with artificial seawater as the background electrolyte

We developed capillary zone electrophoresis with transient isotachophoresis (lTP) as an on-line concentration procedure for simultaneous determination of iodide and iodate in seawater. The effective mobility of iodide was decreased by addition of 20 mM cetyltrimethylammonium chloride to an artificial seawater background electrolyte so that transient ITP functioned for both iodide and iodate. Limits of detection for iodide and iodate were 4.0 and 5.0 mug/l (as iodine) at a signal-to-noise ratio of 3. Values of the relative standard deviation of peak area, peak height, and migration times for iodide and iodate were 2.9, 1.3, 1.0 and 2.3, 2.1, 1.0%, respectively. Modulation of iodide uptake by dialkyl phthalate plasticisers in FRTL-5 rat thyroid follicular cells

Plasticisers imparting flexibility to plastics are man-made chemicals abundantly present in the environment. Effects of six different dialkyl phthalates were studied in vitro in the rat thyroid cell line FRTL-5 on their ability to modulate basal iodide uptake mediated by the sodium/iodide symporter (NIS). The present study shows that diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP), dioctyl phthalate (DOP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP) and bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) significantly enhance iodide uptake when concentrations in the magnitude between 10(-4) M and 10(-3) M were applied. In this range, these phthalates do not assess toxicity on the cells. Specific inhibiton of NIS demonstrated that enhancement of iodide uptake is due to NIS. In contrast, benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) also augments iodide uptake at 1 mM but this concentration has just exceeded the toxicity threshold and dibutyl phthalate (BBP), the most toxic compound did not modulate iodide uptake at any concentration applied.
