To a solution of 3-iodo-4-hydroxy-5-methoxybenzaldehyde (1.05 g, 3.78 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (50.0 mL) was added aqueous NaOH solution (1.93 g in 30.0 mL of water) and tbutylammonium iodide (2.09 g, 5.66 mmol) and stirred until clear. Methyl iodide (2.80 mL, 45.8 mmol) was added to the reaction mixture and stirred for 12 h at room temperature. The reaction was quenched with 6N HCl, and the organic product was extracted with CH2Cl2, washed with brine, dried, and concentrated to give a solid. The solid was chromatographed (pentane:dichloromethane, 1:1) to give a white solid.
