To the mixture at 0 C was added a solution of tert-butyl 3- oxopyrrolidine-l-carboxylate (500 mg, 2.702 mmol) in THF (5 mL) and stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was quenched with H20 (20 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (20 mL x 2). The extracts were combined, washed with brine (20 mL), dried over sodium sulfate, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford tert-butyl 3 -(4-cyano-3 -(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)-3 -hydroxypyrrolidine- 1 – carboxylate as a white solid (368 mg, 38%). LCMS (ESI) m/z: 301.0 [M-56+H]+.
