A solution of methyl 4-iodo-3-methylbenzoate (2.0 g, 7.2 mmol) in THF (30 mL) under ? was cooled to -20 C, a solution of /so-propylmagnesium chloride (2 M in THF, 4 mL, 8.0 mmol) was added dropwise and the suspension stirred at -20 C for 1 hour. CO2 (g) was bubbled through the mixture, and the reaction stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The solvent was evaporated and water was added, the aqueous layer was washed with DCM (15 mL 3) and the pH adjusted to 3 by addition of 3M HCI. The mixture was extracted with DCM (15 mL 3) and the combined organic layers dried (Na2S04) and concentrated to give the title compound as a white solid (870 mg, 88%).
