To a mixture of 1,3-diiodopropane (4.4 mL, 38.4 mmol) andethyl 2-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate (0.95 mL, 6.4 mmol) in acetone(16 mL) was added K2CO3 (2.3 g, 16.7 mmol), and the reactionmixture was heated under reflux for 3 days. The mixture was filtered,and the filtrate was then concentrated.
